Frequently Asked Questions about the Undergraduate Program

Can I count 600.107 or 600.109 toward the major computing requirement?

Students who began their undergraduate studies at JHU before Fall 2005 are eligible to use 600.107 or 600.109 toward completion of the computing requirement. Students beginning in Fall 2005 or later must complete a course on scientific computing for the major. A list of eligible courses can be found on the undergraduate information page.

Am I required to take a Linear Algebra course and a Differential Equations course?

Students who began their undergraduate studies at JHU before Fall 2007 are required to complete a course in linear algebra as part of the major requirements. Students beginning in Fall 2007 or later must complete a course in linear algebra AND a course in differential equations. A list of eligible courses to complete this requirement can be found on the undergraduate information page.

How can I find a research opportunity in the department?

The easiest way to get involved in department research is to talk to the faculty. They are always involved in research and welcome the interest of undergraduates.

How can I declare an AM&S major, second major, or minor?

My original department materials show that I must take at least 15 N credits as part of the BS requirements for AMS, but the website now shows a requirement of 12 N credits. Which is correct?

All current students pursuing the BS in AMS must earn at least 12 N credits. Students must earn a C- or better in each course applied to this requirement.

Can I take a course that is required for the major or minor for Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory credit?

No, all courses taken to fulfill a major or minor requirement must be taken for a letter grade.
