Self Evaluation Guidelines for Applicants
To help you evaluate your chances of admission and financial aid at the Applied Mathematics and Statistics Department at Johns Hopkins University, we provide the following information about our expectations for the qualifications of applicants to the graduate program. We suggest that students who do not meet most of these guidelines not apply.
Admissions and financial aid decisions are based on four major factors: Mathematical course background, grades, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, and recommendation letters.
All applicants are required to have official GRE score reports sent to us by the Educational Testing Service. All non-native English speakers are required to have official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) core reports sent to us by the Educational Testing Service. Photocopies are not acceptable. The following codes should be used when submitting a request to ETS for scores to be sent: institution 5332; department 0702; TOEFL 54.
The department strongly recommends that foreign students take the Test of Spoken English (TSE). While the TSE is not required, a high score on the TSE will be viewed favorably in admissions and financial support decisions.
The profiles below give an indication of our standards for admission. They are not rigid requirements, but are intended only as guidelines. An applicant may be successful if some of these guidelines are not satisfied, if there is additional strength in other areas. Conversely, it is possible that an applicant who does meet these guidelines might not be offered admission. The decision process involves a careful assessment of the applicant's likelihood of success in the graduate program, based on all evidence supplied by the applicant.
The typical applicant offered admission has at least:
A grade point average of 3.3 (B+) or higher.
A mathematics background of at least 5 mathematics courses beyond multivariable calculus, including at least two semesters of proof-writing courses (such as analysis, abstract algebra or topology).
Graduate Record Examination scores of:
500 or above on the Verbal part
720 or above on the Quantitative part
600 or above on the Analytical part
A TOEFL score of 100 (IBT)/ 250 (CBT)/ 600 (PBT) or above, if the applicant is not a native English speaker.
The typical applicant considered for full financial support has at least:
A grade point average of 3.6 (A-) or higher.
A mathematics background of at least 7 mathematics courses beyond calculus, including at least three semesters of proof-writing courses.
Graduate Record Examination scores of:
600 or above on the Verbal part
780 or above on the Quantitative part
700 or above on the Analytical part
A TOEFL exam score of 260 (CBT)/ 620 (PBT) or above, if the applicant is not a native English speaker.
