Graduate Fellowships

Wolman Fellowship

The Wolman Fellowship honors the memory of Whiting School alumnus and Professor Abel Wolman, who is world-renowned for his pioneering work in the field of water supply and treatment. The AM&S Department typically offers one Abel Wolman Fellowship to a promising incoming graduate student. This Fellowship provides a waiver of all tuition and a stipend comparable to the TA salary, with no duties required. The department considers each Wolman Fellow to have a full-support commitment, and provides him/her with a TA or RA after the Fellowship year, subject to satisfactory performance in the academic program and in duties.

Scientific Computation (Fink) Award

Donald Fink

This is a new fund thanks to a generous gift from alumnus Donald Fink. Its purpose is to support department graduate students working in the area of scientific computation. The fund can be used in a variety of ways to support their graduate research, including travel to conferences or collaboration with scholars at other institutions; the purchase of equipment, software, or books; or summer/dissertation research support.

Students are invited to submit written proposals for use of the funds; proposals should include an explanation of how the money is to be spent, how the expenditure supports the student’s research effort, and a draft budget. The proposal requires the student’s advisor’s signature.

The decision on whom to fund and at what level is left to the department chair’s discretion.

Counselman Fellowship

Charles and Catherine Counselman

This Fellowship was endowed by a generous gift from JHU alumnus Charles Counselman and his wife Catherine Counselman to support AM&S department graduate students. The Fellowship is offered to a rising second-year doctoral student in mid-spring of their first year. The recipient is chosen by the department's Academic Affairs Committee with final ratification by the department chair. The basis for the award is academic accomplishment and promise, with preference to students who do not have continuing “bonus” support (e.g., Wolman fellows or students without supplements that continue into the second year and beyond). The tenure of the award is the balance of his or her standard full commitment from the department (years 2-5 for students without a master’s degree and years 2-4 for students with master’s degree). The amount of the award is $3,000/year. One award will be made each year provided funds are available.
